Finished Year 1 of BTEC Applied Science? Here’s How to Get Ahead for Year 2

You've finished Year 1 of your BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Applied Science. 🎉
Whether you're celebrating great results or looking at your grades thinking "I know I can do better than that", you've reached an important point in your course. It's tempting to completely forget about science until September — and you absolutely deserve a break! But doing a little preparation before Year 2 begins could make a surprisingly big difference.
That's because Year 2 brings new science, new assignments and, importantly, more externally assessed units. So, what should you expect — and what can you do now to make life easier later?
First: Give Yourself Credit for Getting Through Year 1
Before worrying about what's coming next, recognise what you've already achieved. The first year of BTEC Applied Science can be a big adjustment from GCSE. You've had to get used to combining biology, chemistry and physics, while also balancing exams, practical work and assignments. If your grades weren't what you hoped for, don't spend the summer beating yourself up about them. Instead, ask:
What can I learn from Year 1?
Was there a particular subject you struggled with?
Did you leave revision too late?
Did you understand the science in lessons but struggle to apply it to exam questions?
Did you find it difficult to balance coursework with exam revision?
Identifying why things didn't go as well as you hoped is much more useful than simply deciding you need to "work harder". And if you did brilliantly in Year 1? Fantastic — now the aim is to build on what worked.
What's Coming in Year 2 of BTEC Applied Science?

The exact order in which units are taught can vary between colleges, so your timetable may look slightly different. However, students completing the 1080 GLH Extended Diploma in Applied Science have several mandatory units across the qualification. For many students, Year 1 includes the externally assessed:
Unit 1 – Principles and Applications of Science I
and
Unit 3 – Science Investigation Skills
In Year 2, attention commonly turns to another two important externally assessed units:
Unit 5 – Principles and Applications of Science II
and
Unit 7 – Contemporary Issues in Science
These aren't simply repeats of what you've already done. They bring different content and different exam demands.
🧬 What Should You Expect From Unit 5?
Unit 5 builds on your knowledge of biology, chemistry and physics. You'll encounter topics such as:
Biology
You'll explore areas including cell transport, homeostasis and body systems, requiring you to understand biological processes in considerably more detail.
Chemistry
You'll develop your understanding of properties and applications of materials, including how their structures and physical properties determine their uses.
Physics
You'll encounter further applications of physical principles and will need to confidently use equations, interpret information and explain scientific relationships.

One of the biggest advantages you can give yourself before starting Unit 5 is making sure your Unit 1 foundations are secure. If concepts from Year 1 never quite made sense, they won't necessarily disappear in Year 2. Science builds. A shaky foundation can make the next layer much harder.
📰 And Then There's Unit 7…
Unit 7 – Contemporary Issues in Science can feel very different from the science exams students are used to. Rather than simply remembering scientific facts, you'll need to engage with scientific information and contemporary issues, analyse evidence and communicate scientific ideas effectively.

This means success isn't just about knowing lots of science. You'll also need to develop skills such as:
identifying important information
understanding scientific arguments
interpreting evidence
evaluating information
planning structured answers
communicating scientific ideas clearly.
These skills improve with practice, rather than last-minute memorisation.
😬 Didn't Get the Year 1 Grades You Wanted?
This is where perspective matters. A disappointing Year 1 result doesn't automatically determine how Year 2 will go. But it is useful information. It tells you that something needs to change. The answer isn't necessarily:
"I need to work twice as hard."
A better question is:
"How can I work differently?"
You might need to improve your subject knowledge. You might understand the content but need more exam practice. You might need a better revision system. Or perhaps you need someone to explain difficult topics in a different way. Working harder can help — but working more effectively is even more important.
🌟 Did You Get Good Grades?
Don't switch off here!
Good Year 1 results put you in an excellent position, but Year 2 still brings new challenges. Instead of seeing summer preparation as catching up, think of it as getting ahead. Imagine walking into your first Unit 5 lesson and recognising some of the terminology already. You don't need to have mastered the entire unit.
Even having a basic understanding of upcoming concepts means your lessons become revision and development rather than your very first exposure to the topic. That's a powerful advantage.
☀️ Should You Really Study During the Summer?
Yes — but we're not suggesting spending your entire summer at a desk! Rest matters. You've just completed a demanding academic year and you should enjoy your break. But there's a huge difference between intensive summer studying and doing one or two focused sessions each week. You could:
revisit a difficult Year 1 topic
practise a few Unit 1 calculations
review an old exam paper
make flashcards for key concepts
watch a video introducing a Unit 5 topic
practise interpreting graphs and data
start becoming familiar with Unit 7-style scientific articles.
Even 30–60 minutes at a time can keep your scientific thinking active. By September, you won't feel as though you're starting from zero.
🎯 Start With Your Weakest Area
Not sure where to begin? Think back over Year 1 and divide your science into three categories:
🟢 Confident – topics you could probably answer questions on tomorrow.
🟠 Needs work – topics you understand but aren't completely confident with.
🔴 Help! – topics you never really understood in the first place.
Start with the red topics.
There's little value spending hours revising something you already know simply because it feels comfortable. The biggest improvement usually comes from tackling the areas you've been avoiding.
👩🏫 Do You Need an Applied Science Tutor?
Not necessarily.
Some students are perfectly capable of preparing independently using their notes, textbooks, online resources and past exam questions. But if Year 1 showed you that independent revision wasn't quite enough, this might be the right time to consider some additional support.
An Applied Science tutor can help you identify why you're losing marks rather than simply telling you to revise more. For example, you may need help with:
filling gaps in Year 1 knowledge
understanding difficult scientific concepts
applying knowledge to unfamiliar questions
calculations
interpreting graphs and data
exam technique
structuring longer answers

Imagine your lecturer introduces a topic in Unit 5 and instead of thinking:
"What on earth does that mean?"
you're thinking:
"I've seen this before."
That's the real benefit of starting early. You're not trying to complete Year 2 during your summer holiday. You're simply giving your future self a head start.
Your Year 1 Grades Are a Starting Point — Not the End of the Story
Whether you finished Year 1 with Distinctions or results that disappointed you, Year 2 is another opportunity to show what you're capable of.
Celebrate what went well.
Learn from what didn't.
Take a break.
Then start building towards the student you want to be when you return in September. A little preparation now could save you a huge amount of stress later.
