For many adults, deciding to return to education isn't the biggest hurdle—it's figuring out how to pay for it. The good news is that if you're considering an Access to HE Science Diploma in England, there is government funding available that makes returning to education much more achievable.
The Advanced Learner Loan is specifically designed to help adults study eligible Level 3 qualifications, including many Access to HE Diplomas. Better still, if you go on to complete an eligible university degree, you may never have to repay the loan at all. In this guide, I'll explain how the Advanced Learner Loan works, who can apply, how repayments work, and what you should do next.
What is an Advanced Learner Loan?
An Advanced Learner Loan is a government-backed loan provided through the Student Loans Company to help adults pay the tuition fees for eligible Level 3 to Level 6 courses at approved colleges and training providers in England. This includes many Access to HE Science courses.
Unlike a bank loan:
There are no credit checks.
Your household income is not assessed.
The money is paid directly to your college or course provider, not to you.
You only begin repaying if your income is above the repayment threshold.
Who Can Apply?

Eligibility depends on your individual circumstances, but in general, you may be able to apply if you:
Are aged 19 or over on the first day of your course.
Are studying an eligible Access to HE Diploma.
Meet the residency requirements for funding in England.
Your chosen college will be able to confirm whether your course is eligible before you apply.
Does the Loan Cover the Whole Course Fee?
In most cases, yes. The loan usually covers the tuition fees for the Access to HE course. You don't receive the money yourself—it is paid directly to the college or training provider. However, you'll still need to budget for any additional costs such as:
Travel
Stationery
Textbooks (if required)
A laptop or computer (if studying online)
Childcare or living expenses

Some colleges also have bursaries or hardship funds that may help with costs such as childcare, travel, or equipment. In addition, learners with an Advanced Learner Loan may be eligible to apply for the Advanced Learner Loan Bursary Fund, depending on their circumstances.
How Do Repayments Work?
Many people are pleasantly surprised by how repayments work. You don't repay the loan while you're studying. Repayments only begin after you've completed or left your course and only if your income is above the repayment threshold. Repayments are collected automatically through the tax system (PAYE) if you're employed, or through Self Assessment if you're self-employed. The amount you repay depends on how much you earn, not how much you borrowed. If your income falls below the repayment threshold, your repayments stop until your income increases again.
What if I Go to University Afterwards?
This is one of the biggest advantages of taking an Access to HE course. If you take out an Advanced Learner Loan for a QAA-recognised Access to HE Diploma and then go on to complete an eligible higher education course using Student Finance England funding, the remaining balance of your Access to HE Advanced Learner Loan is written off.
In other words, if you:
Complete your Access course,
Progress to university,
And successfully complete your eligible higher education qualification,
you won't have to repay the remaining balance of your Access course loan.

Is There Any Interest on the Loan?
Yes. Interest starts from the date the first payment is made to your college and continues until the loan is repaid or written off. The interest rate follows the government rules for Advanced Learner Loans and is linked to inflation (Retail Price Index). Although interest is charged, many learners who progress to and complete university will have the remaining Access loan balance written off.
Should I Pay for the Course Myself Instead?
Some learners choose to self-fund, but many decide the Advanced Learner Loan is the more practical option because:
There are no upfront tuition fees.
Repayments depend on earnings.
There are no credit checks.
The loan may be written off after completing university.
Every person's financial circumstances are different, so it's worth discussing your options with your chosen college before enrolling.
Where Can I Find Official Information?
The most reliable source of information is the UK Government. Useful resources include:
Your chosen college or training provider can also advise you on course fees, eligibility, and bursaries.
What to Do Next
If you're thinking about starting an Access to HE Science course, here are some practical next steps:
1. Research Local and Online Providers
Look for colleges or approved providers offering an Access to HE Science Diploma that matches your intended university course.
2. Check the Entry Requirements
Most Access courses have straightforward entry requirements, but each provider may differ slightly.
3. Ask About Funding
Speak to the admissions team and ask:
Is this course eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan?
Are there any bursaries available for childcare, travel, or equipment?
Are there grants available instead of a loan in my circumstances?
4. Check Your University Entry Requirements
Before enrolling, make sure your chosen universities accept the Access course you're considering and understand the grades they expect.
5. Start Preparing for Success
Returning to education after several years can feel daunting, particularly if you've not studied science before. Many adult learners find that a little preparation before the course begins can make the transition much easier.

At Applied Science Tutoring, we support adults throughout their Access to HE journey by helping them build confidence in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, develop effective study skills, and prepare for assignments, exams, and university progression.
Remember—we don't deliver the Access course itself. Instead, we're here to provide additional academic support alongside your college studies, helping you feel confident every step of the way.
